Soft patterns inspired by quiet beauty, poetic places, and a love for the handmade.

My name is Rosalie Sterenborg, and I’m the designer behind The Rosenborg Company — a creative studio rooted in nature, nostalgia, and the quiet elegance of everyday life — based in the Netherlands.

I’m a mom of two, and learning to navigate both the fast and slow moments of life. In my spare time, I started sketching — mostly charcoal portraits, for my family. Over time, I kept drawing and exploring different materials, and that’s how I discovered surface pattern design. Everything I enjoyed came together: drawing, painting, creating something from scratch and… where my love for shape, texture, and color all come to life.

One of the places that inspires me is France — a country I hold close to my heart. Palais Royal (Paris), with its arcades, iron fences and quiet gravel paths, is a place I return to again and again, everytime I visit Paris. Its quiet charm and beauty perfectly reflect the kind of design I try to create: timeless, softly and elegant. Also the French countryside — places like Normandy and Provence — are a big source of inspiration for me. 

Outside of visual art, music is an important part of my creative life — especially classical music. I’m fascinated by how dissonance can draw us in, adding tension and texture, while consonance brings resolution and peace. I see design the same way: the beauty lives in the contrast. A pattern becomes meaningful when it’s not just perfect, — but layered, soulful, and sincere.

Through hand-drawn lines and watercolor washes, I create designs that feel familiar, a little nostalgic, and always made with care.
